15th Anniversary of Frontiers in Genetics: Defining the Next Era of Genetics
The field of genetics is advancing through rapid improvements in genomic assays, analysis methods, functional validation, and clinical and agricultural translation. As technological capabilities have expanded, from multi-omics and single-cell profiling to AI-driven analytics and genome editing, the field has entered a qualitatively new phase. The key limiting factors are no longer primarily data generation, but reproducibility, cross-study and cross-population comparability, robust and interpretable inference, and the systematic conversion of signals into validated mechanisms and real-world impact. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Frontiers in Genetics, this invited-only Research Topic, hosted by our Field Chief Editor, Prof. Enrico Domenici, brings together section-by-section roadmaps for the next decade. It features articles written by our Specialty Chief Editors, Board Members, and celebrated authors across the journal’s 22 sections. Together, these contributions provide a forward-looking, section-by-section strategic framework identifying the scientific, methodological, and translational priorities that will define genetics in the coming decade. Rather than broad summaries, each article will identify:• What changed recently (capabilities that became feasible),• What still blocks progress (spanning conceptual gaps, technical constraints, data fragmentation, regulatory barriers, and implementation challenges)• Which standards and best practices are most urgent, and• Which resources and milestones would most accelerate progress over the next decade.Collectively, these contributions are intended to establish shared benchmarks, priorities, and enabling frameworks that will strengthen rigor, integration, and impact across the discipline. This Research Topic aims to:• Map the priority questions shaping each genetics specialty area for the next decade,• Define standards and benchmarks needed to improve robustness and reproducibility,• Clarify pathways from discovery to impact, including functional validation and implementation,• Highlight shared infrastructure needs (reference datasets, ontologies, quality control frameworks, governance models), and• Provide a coherent, cross-sectional snapshot of genetics as a field, connecting methods, biology, translation, and ethics, while reinforcing the integration of data science, functional validation, translational pathways, and responsible innovation as core pillars of the discipline’s next phase.
