20:20 on Formulations of Choice for the Paediatric Population
The year 2026 marked the 20th anniversary of the publication of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) reflection paper on 'Formulations of choice for the paediatric population'. In recognition of this anniversary, we call for papers reflecting on the progress and advancements from the last 20 years of paediatric medicine, and what the next 20 years of research could bring. The development of paediatric formulations, particularly those suitable for very young children, presents several challenges. Scientists face limited knowledge on the acceptability of different dosage forms, administration volumes, dosage form size, taste, and importantly, the acceptability and safety of formulation excipients in relation to the age and development status of the child. This Research Topic aims to reflect on 20 years of advancements addressing the key objectives of the reflection paper, including but not limited to:• Influences on the administration of medicinal products to neonates, infants and children• Developmental pharmacology of neonates, infants and children• Routes of administration (oral, buccal and sublingual, nasal, rectal, topical, parenteral, pulmonary)• Appropriate dosage forms in relation to age• The safety and use of excipients (preservatives, sweeteners, fillers and solvents, colouring and coating)• The role and importance of taste, smell and texture• Methods to access the acceptability and patient compliance of a medication• Devices for the delivery of paediatric medicinal products (spoon, drops, cup, syringe)• Biopharmaceutics and predictive methods to understand and optimise paediatric drug performance (e.g. in vitro, in silico and PBPK/PBBM approaches)• Strategies to enable equitable access to safe and effective medicines for children, including formulation design, regulatory considerations and global health perspectivesAll article types are invited to be submitted to this Research Topic.
