2D–Silicon Interfaces: Unlocking Next-Generation High-Speed Optoelectronics

This research topic addresses the hot open question of integrating graphene into silicon-based high-speed optoelectronic devices. With the increasing demand for rapid data transmission, graphene's high charge carrier mobility presents significant potential for enhancing silicon photonics. However, its zero bandgap nature poses a challenge for complete integration into Si-based systems. This study will investigate current methodologies, debates, and technological hurdles in utilizing graphene to improve the performance of optical modulators and detectors. By analyzing recent breakthroughs and experimental findings, this research seeks to outline the current state of graphene-Si integration, identify critical obstacles, and propose potential solutions for advancing this promising area of optoelectronic sensor technology.
