Accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (aTMS): Exploring clinical potential and mechanisms for neuropsychiatric disorders
Accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (aTMS) has emerged as a promising advancement in neuromodulation, offering the potential for faster therapeutic responses compared to conventional TMS protocols. Novel approaches such as high-frequency multi-session treatments, theta-burst stimulation, and individualized targeting have been introduced to improve outcomes in conditions like depression, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and addiction. Despite these advances, further research is required to ascertain the sustainability, mechanisms, and optimal application of aTMS across patient populations.Emerging studies have reported promising results, with accelerated protocols showing rapid symptom improvements and manageable safety profiles. Advances in neuroimaging and biomarker discovery are enhancing understanding of individual responses, while technical refinements like AI-driven targeting may further optimize aTMS delivery. Nevertheless, critical gaps remain in determining the best dosing, identifying predictors of response, and ensuring long-term safety and efficacy. This Research Topic aims to bring together high-quality contributions that explore the clinical efficacy, neurobiological mechanisms, methodological innovations, biomarkers, and safety considerations of accelerated TMS approaches. By consolidating current evidence and highlighting emerging innovations, the collection will support clinicians, researchers, and policymakers in understanding the potential and limitations of aTMS within modern psychiatric practice. The scope is limited to studies on accelerated TMS for psychiatric disorders, with a focus on clinical, mechanistic, and methodological advancements. We invite work on topics including:- Efficacy and comparison of aTMS vs. conventional TMS- Mechanistic studies and neurocircuitry involved in aTMS- Predictive biomarkers and individualized treatment strategies- Protocol innovation, safety, and practical implementation- Integration of neuroimaging and AI-assisted techniques Topic editors: Ömer Faruk Uygur, Michael Kritzer-Cheren, Libor Ustohal Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76499/accelerated-transcranial-magnetic-stimulation-atms-exploring-clinical-potential-and-mechanisms-for-neuropsychiatric-disorders
