Accelerating the Transition to Climate Compatible Technology
Technology is central to global efforts to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts. However, debates on climate technologies often overlook practical challenges arising from technology-specific features and region-specific constraints that are difficult to address within conventional economic theories and methodological frameworks. Such challenges frequently emerge in the development, adoption, and implementation of climate technologies in less-developed country contexts, in sectors with limited financial and institutional support, and in nascent or niche technology domains where access to funding can be particularly difficult. This Research Topic focuses on policy- and management-issues related to the development, adoption, and implementation of climate technologies. We are especially interested in contributions that investigate developing country contexts and underfunded sectors, where local implementation challenges remain pressing yet insufficiently addressed. We also welcome studies of emerging, early-stage, or niche climate technologies where capital constraints, limited investor interest, or gaps in public support shape development trajectories and diffusion prospects. The Research Topic invites case-study based contributions and policy brief style papers that examine real-world practices in-depth, including current policy and institutional frameworks, their structural limitations, and potential future directions. Contributions may be grounded in entrepreneurial perspectives (such as innovators, startups, and intermediaries), as well as more macro or sector-level analyses (such as industry dynamics, finance ecosystems, regulation, and system-wide transition pathways). The Research Topic aims to inform both academic debate and policymaking on the transition to climate technology. In particular, it seeks to address questions such as:● Which contexts still lack effective mechanisms to enable climate technology adoption and implementation, and what are the key barriers and potential policy interventions?● How do technological needs and challenges differ across regions and sectors, and how can policy better account for these heterogeneities?● Are existing economic theories and methods adequate to address these issues, and if not, what alternative approaches may be more suitable?● What barriers arise from different viewpoints—e.g., entrepreneurs and technology developers, adopters and users, financiers and investors, regulators and public agencies, or community and civil-society actors—and how do these perspectives shape feasible solutions?● What policy-relevant and/or management-relevant implications follow from identified barriers (including funding constraints), and what actionable measures can help address them?Methodological openness: The Research Topic welcomes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research, including comparative case studies, surveys, econometric analyses, experiments, interview-based studies, process tracing, and other designs suited to uncovering context- and technology-specific mechanisms.
