Accessible and Affordable Mobility Technologies for Older Adults: Innovations for Independent Living

The global population is aging at an unprecedented rate. By 2050, the number of people aged 65 and older is projected to double, placing growing pressure on health systems and communities to support older adults in maintaining their independence and quality of life. A central challenge is mobility: age-related decline in muscle strength, joint function, and balance increasingly limits everyday movement (from walking and climbing stairs to navigating public spaces) and raises the risk of falls, isolation, and loss of autonomy. While high-end assistive technologies exist, cost and accessibility remain critical barriers, particularly for low- and middle-income settings. This Research Topic calls for innovative, affordable, and scalable solutions that can reach those who need them most. We welcome contributions addressing the design, validation, and real-world deployment of accessible mobility technologies for older adults, including (but not limited to):- Mobility Aids: Next-generation canes, walkers, rollators, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters with smart or low-cost enhancements.- Wearable Technology: Smartwatches, activity monitors, and sensor-based systems for fall detection, gait analysis, and health monitoring.- Exoskeletons and Soft Robotics: Lightweight, affordable robotic aids that support movement and balance in everyday settings.- Telehealth and Remote Monitoring: Digital platforms that reduce care gaps and extend support beyond clinical environments.- Impact and Outcomes: Evidence on how assistive technologies affect physical function, independence, and well-being.Research addressing underserved populations, cost-effectiveness, or implementation in resource-limited environments is especially encouraged. Together, these contributions aim to shape a future where aging well is not a privilege, but a universal possibility.
