Acute Pancreatitis Infection: Diagnostic, Microbiological, and Antimicrobial Management of Infected Necrotizing Pancreatitis, Volume III

Due to the remarkable success of the Research Topic 'Transmission and Infection of Arboviruses' and the rapidly evolving subject area, we are pleased to launch Volume III for this topic.Infection of pancreatic necrosis is one of the most serious complications of acute pancreatitis, associated with mortality rates as high as 30%. Distinguishing true infection from sterile inflammatory processes such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome remains a major diagnostic challenge, and the choice, timing, and mode of action of antimicrobial therapy in this setting is still debated. This Research Topic focuses on the clinical microbiology, diagnostics, and antimicrobial/immunological management of infected pancreatic necrosis.Scope includes but is not limited to:- Development and evaluation of novel diagnostic methods (molecular, microbiological, serological, immunological) for distinguishing infected from sterile pancreatic necrosis- Microbiological epidemiology of infected pancreatic necrosis — causative organisms, resistance patterns, geographic/temporal trends- Predictors and biomarkers for early identification of infection in necrotizing pancreatitis- Antimicrobial prophylaxis: efficacy, timing, and resistance implications- Mode of action and clinical utility of antimicrobial agents used in infected necrosis- Detection of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens isolated from pancreatic necrosis- Host immune response and inflammatory/soluble markers associated with infected vs. sterile necrosis- Translational studies linking microbial and immunological findings to clinical decision-making in necrotizing pancreatitis Topic editors: Wandong Hong, Maddalena Zippi, Prof. Dr. med. Peter C Ambe, M.D., MBA, FEBS, Mateusz Jagielski, Sirio Fiorino Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83728/acute-pancreatitis-infection-diagnostic-microbiological-and-antimicrobial-management-of-infected-necrotizing-pancreatitis-volume-iii
