Adaptive Human-Robot Collaboration in Smart Manufacturing: Cognitive Feedback, Dynamic Task Allocation, and Industry 5.0 Integration

The transition toward Industry 5.0 places human wellbeing and operator-centred design at the core of advanced manufacturing systems. Collaborative robots (cobots) are no longer simply tools for automation, they are partners in dynamic, shared workspaces where safety, adaptability, and trust must be continuously negotiated in real time. This Research Topic invites original contributions that advance the design, optimisation, and evaluation of human-robot collaborative systems in smart manufacturing environments. A particular focus is placed on approaches that integrate real-time cognitive and physiological feedback to enable adaptive cobot behaviour, as well as multi-objective frameworks for dynamic task allocation that balance productivity with human comfort and ergonomic risk.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:o Multi-objective task allocation in human-robot collaborative systemso Real-time cognitive load and physiological monitoring for adaptive cobotso Ergonomic risk assessment and workload balancing in collaborative workstationso Safety, trust, and acceptance in human-cobot interactiono Dynamic scheduling and decision-making in shared human-robot workflowso Digital twins and simulation for HRC system design and validationo Human-centred metrics and evaluation frameworks for Industry 5.0 complianceThe collection welcomes original research articles, systematic reviews, methods papers, and perspectives from researchers across industrial engineering, robotics, cognitive science, and human factors. Contributions that bridge theoretical modelling with experimental or industrial validation are particularly encouraged.
