Adaptive silviculture and forest governance in tropical and temperate regions under climate change

In recent decades, ecosystems worldwide have undergone profound transformation driven by escalating anthropogenic pressures and the accelerating impacts of climate change. These forces have driven significant biodiversity loss and put the provision of ecosystem services that support human well-being at risk, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Tropical and temperate ecosystems have been among the most severely impacted, with pronounced losses in ecological integrity. In response, holistic approaches — notably adaptive silviculture and forest governance — have been advanced to help forests adjust to climate change by strengthening resistance, resilience, or capacity for transformation, while sustaining ecosystem services. Central to these approaches are experimentation and collaboration among scientists, managers, policymakers, and Indigenous communities, with practices tailored to specific forest types and local conditions. The main objective of this Research Topic is to bring together scientific knowledge and practical experience that advance the resilience of agroforestry and forest ecosystems, as well as the livelihoods of local communities, through approaches grounded in adaptive silviculture and forest governance.Any related contributions are welcome, but submissions addressing the following themes are particularly encouraged: (1) adaptive silviculture and inclusive forest governance, with emphasis on community participation in policymaking and the adoption of appropriate forest and farming systems; (2) practical case studies of adaptive silviculture and forest governance in temperate regions adaptable to tropical contexts, and vice versa; (3) state-of-the-art advances in adaptive silviculture and forest governance within the Miombo woodlands and Cerrado savannas; (4) approaches to mainstreaming biodiversity integration into adaptive silviculture and forest governance frameworks; (5) the role of protected areas as catalysts for scaling up adaptive silviculture and forest governance initiatives.
