Adaptive Strategies of Amphibians and Reptiles to Climate Change

Amphibians and reptiles are among the most vulnerable vertebrate groups to environmental perturbations, with a significant proportion already facing extinction threats. Their ectothermic physiology makes them particularly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, altered precipitation patterns, and rising sea levels, all exacerbated by climate change. While some species exhibit remarkable phenotypic plasticity, such as shifts in breeding phenology or microhabitat selection (e.g., UV-B avoidance), the rapid pace and multifaceted nature of current climatic changes challenge the efficacy and evolutionary potential of these inherent adaptive capacities. Research into these adaptive mechanisms is therefore paramount for understanding herpetofaunal persistence and conservation. This Research Topic aims to investigate the diverse adaptive strategies employed by herpetofauna in response to environmental change. By elucidating the mechanisms of adaptation, from behavioral modifications and physiological adjustments to genetic evolution, we seek to identify key factors promoting resilience and vulnerability. Ultimately, the goal is to generate vital knowledge that informs proactive conservation and management strategies, enabling us to better predict future population responses and enhance the long-term survival of these vital taxa.Scope and information for authors: This Research Topic invites submissions exploring the adaptive strategies of amphibians and reptiles across various biological scales, from individual plasticity to population-level evolutionary responses. We encourage contributions on themes including, but not limited to: • Behavioral adaptations (e.g., microhabitat selection, nesting strategies)• Physiological adjustments (e.g., thermal tolerance, water balance)• Genetic adaptations (e.g., conservation genomics) • Disease ecology in a changing climate, and adaptive management frameworks for threatened species. We welcome research that advances our understanding of herpetofaunal resilience and inform urgent conservation interventions. If you are interested in submitting or have any questions please contact the journal email: amphibianandreptilescience@frontiersin.org Topic editors: Susan C.
