Addressing the Maternity Needs of Migrant Mothers - Vol. II
Over the past twenty years, armed conflict, societal discrimination, and economic insecurity have resulted in unprecedented migration to Western industrialized countries. Upon arrival in their host countries, migrant parents often face a unique set of challenges. In particular, there is mounting evidence that the maternity needs of migrant mothers have not been adequately met. The reasons are multi-factorial, including language, communication, stigma, unconscious bias, the lack of health literacy, as well as the wider determinants of health that impact on their health behaviors and their access to care. While health systems and institutional structures are responsible for the gaps in services, investment in public health interventions and evaluations of their effectiveness to address these issues is generally very limited. In addition, some groups of migrants may have specific health beliefs, experiences in their countries of origin, and migration histories that can impact whether and how they access care in their host countries. This second volume of the Research Topic "Addressing the Maternity Needs of Newly Settled Migrant Mothers", will welcome not only research on newly settled migrants but also all recently arrived migrants, reflecting current world events. In partnership with the Maternity Stream Research Network and the 2nd Migrant Maternal Health and Early Childhood Research Conference, we are welcoming submissions focused on current practice and experience with maternity care for migrant women, as well as new proposed models of care. Medical and public health interventions and evaluations of interventions to address perinatal issues faced by migrant mothers are still limited as health systems across the globe are faced with the complex factors involved in managing healthcare for immigrants. Country-specific contexts include security threats, economic strife, migration and displacement, leading to greater public and political shifts towards populist and nationalistic sentiments and government policies to better control immigration. In addition to original research demonstrating methodologies for providing insights into how the maternity needs of migrant women can be met, we welcome diverse perspectives through a variety of contribution types such as: policy and practice reviews, community case studies, and policy briefs. Frontiers in Global Women's Health also offers the option to submit brief research reports which we would encourage to report on negative results and reflections on lessons learnt. Thus, this collection will aim to showcase examples of initiatives in health, social care, the third sector, and advocacy settings which can increase the wellbeing of migrant women and their families during the perinatal period.
