Addressing Unmet Dental Needs Among Children with Special Healthcare Needs
Optimal oral healthcare is a fundamental aspect of overall health that should be accessible to all individuals. However, over 600 million children globally suffer from untreated dental caries, suggesting that many still lack access to proper dental care. Children, both typically developing and those with special healthcare needs (SHCN), face added obstacles to achieving optimal oral health due to various factors. These may include increased financial costs, a shortage of dental professionals with the appropriate knowledge and facilities, and behavioural difficulties. These challenges can make it more challenging for both groups of children to access the dental care they need. The purpose of this Research Topic is to compile articles that investigate evidence-based techniques for enhancing their access to high-quality dental care among children with developmental cognitive disabilities and their typical peers. We encourage the submission of original research and reviews that elucidate effective methods, interventions, and policies that promote improved oral health practices for children with special needs and their typical peers. Through this collection, we aim to provide valuable insights to both clinicians and researchers, thereby enhancing paediatric oral healthcare. We welcome submissions that cover a wide range of topics related to improving oral healthcare for the paediatric population. This includes articles on preventive measures, early intervention approaches, community-based programs, transition of care from paediatric to adult dental services, oral health education for children with or without special needs. Additionally, studies that aim to reduce barriers for children to accessing oral healthcare, enhance the awareness, knowledge and skills of dental professionals and healthcare providers are highly encouraged. Our goal is to gather a comprehensive collection of articles that provide valuable insights and strategies for improving oral healthcare for this vulnerable population. We invite you to join us in this important research endeavour aimed at revolutionising the oral health of individuals with special needs. By sharing knowledge, evidence-based practices, and innovative solutions, we can work towards enhancing oral health outcomes, reducing the burden of oral disease, and ensuring equitable access to high-quality oral healthcare for all. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of children with or without special needs and their families.
