Advanced and Innovative Research in Sustainable and Efficient Geothermal Technologies
The world is currently confronting persistent and emerging environmental challenges, along with concerns regarding the reliability of energy supply. To address these issues and accommodate the rapidly increasing global energy demand, developing and implementing effective, innovative, cost-competitive, and practical solutions is necessary. Zero-/low-carbon, renewable, and environmentally sustainable energy sources not only contribute to meeting energy requirements but also help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, diminish the risks associated with global warming, and promote sustainability and decarbonization targets. Among these alternatives, geothermal sources can be a promising, stable and reliable solution for generating the energy required by different societies.Goal:The primary goal of this Research Topic is to bring together cutting-edge research and innovative perspectives on advancing sustainable and efficient geothermal technologies. Although geothermal energy holds significant potential as a clean, baseload, and reliable energy source, its widespread adoption remains constrained by high exploration and development costs, technical challenges in resource characterization, and limitations in system efficiency. The Topic welcomes contributions that address these barriers through innovative approaches, including advanced drilling and reservoir engineering methods, enhanced energy conversion technologies, smart and hybrid systems, cost-optimization strategies, and environmentally responsible practices. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and highlighting fundamental research and practical applications, this Research Topic aims to provide a platform to fill knowledge gaps and accelerate geothermal energy deployment in global energy transitions. Submissions are encouraged from researchers, practitioners, and policymakers committed to promoting sustainability, decarbonization, and energy security through geothermal innovation.Scope and Information for Authors: Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS)• Geothermal heat pumps and district heating/cooling applications• Smart and hybrid geothermal energy systems • Advanced geothermal heating and cooling technologies• Innovations in geothermal power plant design and operation • Geothermal energy for climate change mitigation• The role of geothermal energy in sustainability and decarbonization pathways • Geothermal technologies and energy storage integration (thermal, electrical, or hydrogen) • Environmental impact assessment and sustainable resource management• Techno-economic evaluation and market competitiveness• Social, policy, regulatory, and political aspects of geothermal energy deployment• Life cycle analysis of geothermal systems• Energy and exergy analysis of geothermal processes• Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital twins for geothermal exploration, operation, and optimization• Advanced drilling, well design, and reservoir stimulation technologies• Materials innovation for geothermal applications (e.g., corrosion-resistant materials, advanced heat exchangers)• Hybridization of geothermal energy with other renewables • Carbon capture, utilization, and storage coupled with geothermal systemsOriginal research articles, review articles, case studies, and technical notes are welcome in this Research Topic.
