Advanced Biosensing Devices and Molecular Bioelectronics for Translational Clinical Diagnostics
Rapid and accurate disease detection is essential for early intervention, risk stratification, treatment guidance, and prognosis evaluation. Recent advances in biotechnology have created new opportunities to develop next-generation diagnostic tools, including innovative biosensors, biomolecular electronics, point-of-care diagnostic devices, and integrated molecular testing units. In parallel, clinical biomarkers derived from pathogen detection profiles and molecular indicators are increasingly being targeted via advanced bioelectronics and biosensing arrays to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making. However, translating these biosensing technologies and biomarkers from laboratory innovation to clinically reliable, standardized applications remains challenging. This Research Topic aims to provide a multidisciplinary forum for studies that bridge novel biosensor fabrication, assay engineering, analytical validation, and real-world clinical application. This Research Topic seeks to address the gap between innovative diagnostic technology development and clinically meaningful disease detection. Although many bioengineered diagnostic platforms and biosensors show excellent analytical performance, their clinical translation is often limited by complex sample preparation, insufficient validation in real-world specimens, lack of sensor standardization, and unclear clinical interpretation. Similarly, many candidate biomarkers require stronger evidence regarding diagnostic performance and reproducibility when integrated into functional devices. The goal of this Research Topic is to collect high-quality studies that demonstrate how biosensor fabrication, molecular bioelectronics, and advanced bioengineering approaches can improve disease diagnosis, pathogen detection, biomarker evaluation, and clinical decision-making. We particularly encourage work that integrates novel biosensor architecture with clinical validation, including studies involving complex clinical samples, point-of-care testing, multiplex detection, and intelligent data analysis connected directly to sensor platforms. This Research Topic welcomes submissions focused on the development, fabrication, and healthcare application of biosensing devices, biochips, and biomolecular detection methos. Relevant themes include, but are not limited to: • Advanced biosensors, including nanosensors, immunosensors, and wearable biosensing configurations for clinical diagnostics. • Biomolecular and DNA/protein electronics, including CRISPR-, Argonaute-, FEN1-, or enzyme-assisted molecular detection platforms. • Isothermal amplification systems optimized for point-of-care diagnostics and rapid testing. • Clinical biomarker evaluation and combination diagnostics verified via functional biosensing arrays. We welcome Original Research, Methods, Technology and Code, Brief Research Reports, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, and Perspectives. Manuscripts should emphasize methodological innovation, analytical performance, sensor reproducibility, and potential for real-world implementation. Studies combining engineering design with validation in clinical specimens are particularly encouraged.
