Advanced Energy Storage Systems under Complex Operating Conditions: Performance, Safety, Stability, and Adaptive Operation
The rapid deployment of renewable energy, electrified transportation, smart grids, and flexible energy infrastructures has significantly increased the importance of advanced energy storage systems in future low-carbon energy systems. Batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen-based storage, thermal energy storage, and hybrid energy storage technologies are increasingly used to improve system flexibility, operational efficiency, and renewable energy utilization. However, these technologies are expected to operate under increasingly complex and dynamic conditions, including fluctuating renewable generation, variable load demand, fast charging and discharging, wide temperature variations, grid disturbances, and multi-energy interactions. These operating conditions introduce highly coupled electrochemical, thermal, electrical, mechanical, and control dynamics that directly affect system performance, operational stability, and energy management efficiency.Recent advances in power electronics, advanced sensing, digital twins, artificial intelligence, multi-physics modeling, and intelligent optimization have created new opportunities for improving the operation and management of advanced energy storage systems. Nevertheless, significant challenges remain in coordinated control, adaptive energy management, operational optimization, and real-time decision-making under highly dynamic operating environments. This Research Topic aims to bring together recent advances in modeling, monitoring, control, optimization, and practical engineering applications for advanced energy storage systems operating under complex conditions. Particular emphasis will be placed on intelligent operational strategies that improve system efficiency, flexibility, stability, and adaptive capability across diverse energy applications. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, Methods, and Case Study articles addressing theoretical advances and engineering applications related to advanced energy storage systems.
