Advanced Intelligent Physical-Layer Frameworks and Waveform Designs for 6G Optical Communication Networks
In our society, industry, and everyday life, rapidly changing habits in information generation, sensing, sharing, and consumption have sparked a massive increase in data flow with varying quality-of-experience needs. Next-generation communication networks must provide ubiquitous services, large data rates, and strict latency guarantees to keep pace with these developments. To take advantage of the combined strengths of cutting-edge optical and wireless technologies, optical wireless communication systems are being actively developed. Optical wireless systems will become a crucial component of future communication network architectures due to their inherent benefits, including ultra-high bandwidth, long communication distances, and robust data privacy. In 6G, WLANs, AR/VR, and other network applications, optical wireless communications will be essential. Coordination and design of these systems remain unresolved challenges. The technologies underlying optical wireless communication and networking are grounded in deeper scientific concepts, and the field has advanced well beyond traditional communication applications. Many of the technical advances draw on recent discoveries in engineering physics and optoelectronics, alongside renewed attention from the communities of electrical communication engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and AI. Optical communication technologies continue to find uses that go beyond traditional high-speed data transmission: terahertz communications, holographic representation, and optical metamaterial-based reconfigurable intelligent surfaces for beamforming are examples of how cutting-edge technologies are being applied to future multidisciplinary applications.
