Advanced Materials for Space Applications: Wide Bandgap Semiconductors and Solar Energy Systems in Extreme Environments

This Research Topic focuses on emerging materials and device technologies designed to operate under the extreme conditions encountered in space environments. Emphasis is placed on wide bandgap semiconductors, radiation-resistant materials, and advanced photovoltaic technologies capable of maintaining performance under high radiation, vacuum, and large temperature variations.Space exploration and satellite technologies require materials and devices that can reliably operate under extreme environmental conditions, including high radiation flux, ultraviolet exposure, vacuum, and severe thermal cycling. Recent advances in wide bandgap semiconductor materials such as Gallium Oxide, Gallium Nitride, Silicon Carbide, and Aluminum Nitride have opened new opportunities for robust electronic and optoelectronic systems for space missions. In addition, next-generation photovoltaic technologies, including radiation-tolerant solar cells and high-efficiency devices, are critical for sustainable energy generation in satellites, deep-space probes, and planetary missions. This topic invites original research articles, reviews, and perspectives addressing material synthesis, device engineering, reliability, and performance evaluation of advanced materials for space environments.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:- Wide bandgap semiconductor materials for space electronics- Radiation-hard materials and devices- Solar cells and photovoltaic systems for space missions- Materials for extreme temperature and vacuum environments- Thin-film deposition techniques for space-grade materials- Space-compatible sensors and photodetectors- Reliability, degradation, and lifetime studies under radiation exposure- Novel materials for spacecraft electronics and power systems Topic editors: Anand Pandey, Dr. Pramod Mandal, Romeo Shagolsem Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79222/advanced-materials-for-space-applications-wide-bandgap-semiconductors-and-solar-energy-systems-in-extreme-environments
