Advanced Micro‑Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Hollow‑Fiber Materials, Co‑Sintered Microtubes, and Compact Power Devices

Micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (MT-SOFCs) offer fast start up, compact form factors, and high-power density, which makes them attractive for distributed and portable power. Wider deployment, however, still depends on microtubular specific advances: robust ceramic hollow fiber and dual layer supports, defect controlled thin electrolytes on small radii, stable porous electrodes at reduced thickness, and fabrication methods that are scalable and repeatable at the microtube level. This Research Topic focuses on how micro tubular geometry, hollow fiber architectures, and integrated microtube fabrication routes influence electrochemical performance, durability, and practical device implementation.Goal: The goal of this Research Topic is to collect contributions that connect MT-SOFC materials and microtube structures (supports/electrolytes/electrodes) with performance and stability, and that clarify practical routes toward reliable, scalable micro tubular cells, bundles, and compact stacks for portable and distributed power.Scope and information for Authors:We welcome focused contributions on micro tubular and closely related tubular SOFCs, including:• Hollow fiber and microtube support design, including dual layer supports, graded porosity, and mechanical robustness at small diameters• Thin electrolyte formation on microtubes, including sintering aids, densification strategies, and defect control (pinholes/cracking)• Anode and cathode microstructure engineering tailored to micro tubular geometries (adhesion, gas diffusion, triple phase boundary management)• Integrated fabrication routes for anode/electrolyte/cathode microtubes (co sintering, one step or reduced step processes, scalable coating/infiltration methods)• Performance and durability under hydrogen and selected hydrocarbon fuels, including start stop behavior and thermal cycling relevant to MT-SOFC use cases• Compact MT-SOFC devices and stacks, including tube bundles/manifolding concepts and packaging approaches for distributed or portable powerSubmissions should clearly relate to fuel cell materials, micro tubular architectures, fabrication, or device implementation and in general, fit within the Fuel Cells, Electrolyzers and Membrane Reactors section.
