Advanced Modelling and Applications of Heat and Mass Transfer in Thermal Energy Systems
Thermal transport and fluid flow are fundamental to the performance, efficiency, and reliability of modern energy systems and thermal technologies. Continued progress in this field depends on a deeper understanding of heat and mass transfer mechanisms, the development of advanced working fluids and materials, and the application of robust modelling and optimization tools. These challenges are relevant across a broad range of areas, including thermal management, renewable energy, energy conversion and storage, cooling technologies, and industrial process systems.Recent research has shown growing interest in both conventional and advanced fluids, such as nanofluids, hybrid nanofluids, ternary nanofluids, phase-change materials, and multiphase systems, owing to their potential to enhance thermal performance. At the same time, increasingly complex thermal systems require detailed investigation of transport phenomena under diverse conditions, including natural, forced, and mixed convection, transport in porous media, phase change, and coupled heat and mass transfer. These processes are strongly influenced by thermophysical properties, geometry, boundary conditions, operating parameters, and system design. To address such complexity, researchers are making wide use of experimental methods, theoretical approaches, numerical simulations, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In parallel, artificial intelligence and machine learning methods are becoming valuable tools for prediction, optimization, and system design. Techniques such as artificial neural networks, surrogate models, and hybrid physics-based/data-driven approaches can complement conventional modelling by reducing computational cost and enabling rapid performance assessment across a broad design space. This Research Topic aims to bring together recent advances in the analysis, modelling, and application of heat and mass transfer and fluid flow in thermal science and energy systems.
