Advanced Technologies for Flexible, Reliable, and Resilient Renewable-Integrated Smart Grids

The rapid transition toward low-carbon energy systems is accelerating the deployment of renewable energy resources, distributed energy storage, electrified transportation, and advanced power electronic technologies across modern power systems. At the same time, the increasing penetration of converter-interfaced renewable generation, flexible loads, and digital infrastructures is transforming traditional power grids into highly interconnected and intelligent smart grids. While these developments provide unprecedented opportunities for improving sustainability and operational flexibility, they also introduce significant challenges related to system reliability, resilience, stability, and secure operation. Consequently, developing advanced technologies that enable flexible, reliable, and resilient smart grids has become a critical research priority for supporting future renewable-integrated energy systems. The growing complexity of renewable-integrated smart grids requires coordinated solutions spanning system planning, operation, control, and asset management. High renewable penetration, increasing electrification of transportation, widespread deployment of power electronic converters, and stronger coupling between generation, networks, storage, and flexible demand create new operational uncertainties and dynamic interactions that cannot be adequately addressed using conventional approaches. Recent advances in power electronics, distributed optimization, digital twins, artificial intelligence, advanced sensing, real-time simulation, and cyber-physical energy systems provide promising opportunities to improve operational flexibility, enhance system resilience, strengthen reliability, and support intelligent decision-making. This Research Topic aims to bring together innovative methodologies, enabling technologies, and practical applications that advance the planning, operation, monitoring, and control of renewable-integrated smart grids. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Mini-Reviews, Perspectives, and Case Studies addressing theoretical developments, methodological innovations, and engineering applications for renewable-integrated smart grids.
