Advanced Treatment Technologies for Sustainable Contaminant Removal and Resource Recovery

The increasing presence of emerging contaminants and the growing demand for sustainable resource management require innovative, integrated, and intelligent treatment technologies in line with circular economy principles. Persistent and recalcitrant pollutants from industrial, urban and agricultural sources continue to challenge conventional treatment systems, which calls for approaches that combine pollutant degradation, process control and the recovery of valuable resources. This cross-listed Research Topic will bring together advances in chemical, photocatalytic, electrochemical and hybrid chemical-biological treatment systems for the removal of pharmaceuticals, microplastics, endocrine disruptors and other emerging contaminants. It will also cover anaerobic digestion, dark fermentation and related bioprocesses when they contribute to pollutant removal, waste valorization or the recovery of biohydrogen, biomethane, nutrients and other valuable products. Particular attention will be given to mathematical modelling, simulation, sensors, process control, artificial intelligence and optimization approaches that support reactor design, monitoring, scale-up and real-world implementation. Studies addressing green catalyst and sorbent synthesis, life cycle assessment, ecotoxicity, transformation products and treatment sustainability are also welcome.By linking environmental chemistry with chemical and biochemical engineering, the Research Topic aims to connect researchers working on pollutant degradation, process intensification and resource recovery, while allowing each manuscript to be considered in the journal and section that best match its scientific emphasis. We welcome original research, reviews and brief communications on:• Chemical and photocatalytic treatment technologies: Advanced oxidation processes, photocatalysis, heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, catalyst design, photoreactors, ozonation, persulfate and related approaches for the removal and transformation of emerging and recalcitrant contaminants.• Electrochemical and hybrid treatment systems: Electrooxidation, electro-Fenton, photoelectrochemical processes, electrocoagulation and integrated chemical-biological treatment trains for water and wastewater remediation.• Anaerobic and biological processes for resource recovery: Anaerobic digestion, dark fermentation, microbial biotransformation, biohydrogen and biomethane production, waste valorization and biological polishing steps when integrated with chemical treatment or resource-recovery strategies.• Modelling, monitoring, control and optimization: Mathematical modelling, process simulation, reactor design, soft sensors, automatic control, machine learning, artificial intelligence and multi-objective optimization for treatment performance, monitoring and scale-up.• Green chemistry, assessment and implementation: Sustainable synthesis of catalysts, sorbents and functional materials, nutrient and energy recovery, life cycle assessment, ecotoxicity, transformation products, process safety, techno-economic assessment and validation with real or complex effluents.
