Advancements in Carbonate Geology: Depositional settings, Sedimentology, Chemostratigraphy, Reservoir Characterization, and Environmental Sustainability: Volume II

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume can be found here: Advancements in Carbonate Geology: Depositional settings, Sedimentology, Chemostratigraphy, Reservoir Characterization, and Environmental Sustainability Carbonate rocks represent a vital component of the Earth's geological framework, playing significant roles in hydrocarbon reservoirs, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and sedimentary processes. This Research Topic explores the latest advancements and challenges in carbonate geology, focusing on deposition, sedimentology, geochemistry, stratigraphy, and reservoir characterization of carbonate rocks. The rationale for this Research Topic stems from the diverse and dynamic nature of carbonate geology and its relevance to both academic research and industrial applications. Despite considerable progress, several knowledge gaps persist, necessitating a comprehensive examination of the carbonate systems. By consolidating cutting-edge research and insights, the Research Topic aims to address these gaps and foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the scientific community. This collection of articles will serve as a valuable resource for academics seeking to deepen their understanding of carbonate systems, as well as industry professionals involved in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Therefore, the topic offers an opportunity to showcase the latest research, methodologies, and insights in this dynamic field, and further advances carbonate geology and its applications. This Research Topic aims to provide an overview of the interplay of all sedimentological, chemostratigraphic, and hydrocarbon-generated processes across a variety of settings (coastal to open marine) and timescales. Potential contributions can be both global and/or regional in scope, dealing with all-time slices, from the Archean to the Quaternary. Among the priorities are the multidisciplinary paleoenvironmental reconstructions using integrated geochemical/geomechanical proxies, and related techniques (e.g., facies distribution, well logging, seismic stratigraphy), which further add a geological time dimension to this topic through sequence stratigraphic correlations. We also encourage contributions outlining the applications of novel state-of-the-art techniques that provide important information on this topic.Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following:• Depositional processes and environments of carbonate rocks• Innovative techniques for reservoir characterization and modelling• Diagenetic processes and their impact on reservoir quality• Isotopic and elemental geochemistry of carbonates• Sedimentological analysis of carbonate sequences and facies• Sequence stratigraphy based on carbonate records• Case studies highlighting the practical implications of carbonate geology in hydrocarbon exploration and production.• Development of the innovative CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technology in underground geological formations for a sustainable energy future.• Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP): The role of stromatolites in microbial carbonate factories and their environmental implications.
