Advancements in Prebiotics, Synbiotics and Postbiotics: Mechanisms, Health Implications, and Market Potential in Gut Microbiota Modulation
The field of gut microbiota modulation has rapidly expanded, with prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics emerging as pivotal agents in shaping intestinal microbial composition and function. While prebiotics have evolved from their initial definition as indigestible food components to recognised modulators that encourage the growth of beneficial microorganisms, ongoing research continues to reveal novel interactions, metabolic pathways, and health impacts. Synbiotics, including prebiotics and probiotics, represent targeted strategies to improve microbiome diversity, gut barrier function, and systemic health. More recently, postbiotics, defined as preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confer a health benefit on the host, have attracted growing interest as a complementary strategy with promising stability, safety, and functional potential. Together, these approaches exemplify targeted nutritional and microbiome-based strategies to improve microbiome diversity, strengthen gut barrier function, regulate immune responses, and support systemic health. Despite promising developments, uncertainties persist regarding their mechanisms of action, optimal formulations, safety profiles, and efficacy, especially in the management or prevention of complex diseases such as obesity and inflammatory disorders. This Research Topic summarises current advancements in prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics, with emphasis on their biological mechanisms, health implications, and translation into market-relevant applications. By synthesising recent scientific evidence with advances in formulation and delivery technologies, the objective is to clarify how these microorganisms and compounds modulate the gut microbiota and human well-being. Central questions to be addressed include the mechanisms underlying their beneficial effects, emerging clinical and preclinical findings, and the challenges related to standardisation and regulatory assessment. To gather further insights into the breadth and limitations of this Research Topic, we welcome original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews and other article types accepted by the journal addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Biochemical and physiological mechanisms of prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics o Interactions with the gut microbiota and production of health-related metaboliteso Impacts on metabolic, inflammatory, and gastrointestinal diseaseso Advances in formulation technologies and delivery systemso Clinical evidence, efficacy, and safety considerationso Regulatory challenges and global market trends for functional foods containing prebiotics, synbiotics and postbioticso Future directions for research, including unmet needs and perspectives on precision nutritiono Future directions for research, including precision nutrition and next-generation microbiome interventions Topic editors: Tales Fernando da Silva, Babak Pakbin, Pamela Del Carmen Mancha-Agresti, Manuela Oliveira Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81058/advancements-in-prebiotics-synbiotics-and-postbiotics-mechanisms-health-implications-and-market-potential-in-gut-microbiota-modulation
