Advances and Applications in Lattice Boltzmann Method
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) stands as a robust computational fluid dynamics technique, offering an alternative approach to solving the conventional Navier-Stokes equations for complex fluid dynamics scenarios. Since it grew out of the lattice gas models of the late 1980s, LBM has evolved significantly through enhancements in collision operators, forcing schemes, boundary conditions, multiphase modeling, and more. It has found applications in diverse and challenging flow regimes including turbulent, supersonic, multiphase, thermal, and non-Newtonian flows. Furthermore, LBM has been successfully integrated with other methodologies to solve combustion, fluid-structure interaction, and porous media problems. Despite its advancements, LBM remains a relatively young method, emphasizing the necessity for further exploration in numerical algorithms, computational techniques, interdisciplinary insights, and varied applications to foster innovation and broaden its utility. The proposed Research Topic aims to showcase recent advancements in the numerical methodologies of LBM and explore the diverse industrial challenges addressed through its application. The primary objective is to bridge the theoretical underpinnings of LBM with practical solutions. We welcome the exploration of both open-source and commercial software applications to identify trends in these tools across academic and industrial domains. Our goal is to assemble a collection of research articles, case studies, and reviews that will prompt discussions on the challenges, future advancements, and potential applications of LBM across multidisciplinary fields. We invite submissions covering, but not limited to, the following themes:• Computational methodologies;• Numerical techniques;• Multiphase and multicomponent flows;• Fluid-structure interactions;• Direct acoustic simulations;• Flow through porous media;• Applications in aeronautical, thermal, mechanical, and civil engineering;• Integration of data-driven methods in the development and application of LBM.
