Advances and Controversies of Endoscopic/Robotic Thyroidectomy

Over the past three decades, thyroid surgery has undergone remarkable evolution with the introduction of minimally invasive and remote-access techniques. Since the first endoscopic thyroidectomy was reported in the late 1990s, multiple approaches have been developed, including the transaxillary, bilateral axillo-breast, retroauricular, and transoral vestibular approaches. More recently, robotic platforms have further expanded the possibilities of remote-access thyroid surgery by providing enhanced dexterity, three-dimensional visualization, tremor filtration, and improved ergonomics. Initially reserved for selected patients with benign thyroid disease, endoscopic and robotic thyroidectomy are now increasingly applied to patients with differentiated thyroid cancer and other thyroid pathologies. Numerous studies have demonstrated comparable oncological and surgical outcomes to conventional open thyroidectomy while offering superior cosmetic benefits and improved patient satisfaction. Nevertheless, important controversies remain regarding patient selection, oncologic safety, cost-effectiveness, learning curves, quality-of-life outcomes, and the role of emerging technologies. As experience accumulates worldwide, further evidence is needed to clarify the long-term clinical value and optimal indications of these techniques. This Research Topic aims at the development of new technologies, instruments, and concepts in Endoscopic/Robotic Thyroidectomy; large sample studies with long-term follow-up; randomized case-control studies compared between endoscopic/robotic surgery and traditional open surgery. We welcome submissions of original study, review, and surgical technique, in the following subtopics, but not limited to:• Endoscopic/Robotic thyroid/parathyroid surgery including endoscopic assisted, anterior chest approach, transoral approach, transaxillary approach, retroauricular approach, robotic assisted, or other approaches for thyroidectomy, the advantages and disadvantages analysis, short-term or long-term prognosis• The development of new technologies, instruments, and concepts in endoscopic thyroid surgery• Large sample study with long-term follow-up for endoscopic/robotic thyroidectomy outcome• Randomized case-control studies for endoscopic/robotic thyroidectomy outcome Topic editors: Ngo Quoc Duy, Kyung Tae, Han Boon Oh Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83084/advances-and-controversies-of-endoscopicrobotic-thyroidectomy
