Advances in Adaptive Responses of Solanaceae Species to Stress
The Solanaceae family comprises numerous species of global importance, significantly contributing to food security worldwide. Their broad distribution worldwide and their growth in various environmental conditions make these species vulnerable to a wide range of stress factors, both biotic (pathogens and pests), and abiotic (e.g. drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, or nutrient deficiencies). In the context of climate change, the adaptability historically acquired in certain regions has been reduced, thereby increasing their vulnerability and emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of stress response mechanisms. Climate change has also led to progressive soil salinization and more frequent water shortages, both of which substantially affect plant growth and productivity. At the same time, diseases specific to certain areas have spread to other regions of the world, confronting farmers with new challenges in crop protection. These shifts increase the pressure on agronomic management and the need to develop resistant varieties and integrated strategies to combat biotic and abiotic stresses. Taken together, this global dynamic shows how important it is to study how plants respond to stress and how well they can adapt to changes in their environment. Therefore, investigating the physiological, molecular, and metabolic responses of Solanaceous species to stress factors, as well as discovering innovative treatments, biostimulants, and agronomic strategies to enhance their adaptability and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, is a major priority in contemporary research. To address the future challenges in the cultivation and sustainability of Solanaceous species, we invite authors to submit original research articles, reviews, and methodological papers addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:• Physiological, molecular, and metabolic responses of Solanaceous species to environmental stresses• Responses to biotic stresses, including pests, pathogens, and beneficial microbial interactions• Breeding, biotechnological, and agronomic strategies to enhance stress tolerance and crop resilience• Application of biostimulants, elicitors, and natural compounds to improve adaptability and productivity• Multi-omics approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) for understanding stress responses and improving crop performance Topic editors: Vasile Stoleru, Gianluca Caruso, Mihaela Rosca Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/74721/advances-in-adaptive-responses-of-solanaceae-species-to-stress
