Advances in Biomechanical Modelling: From Characterisation to Clinical Applications
Biomechanical modelling has become central to understanding how biological tissues, joints, and organ systems respond to physiological and pathological loading. Advances in soft tissue characterisation, medical imaging, computational methods, artificial intelligence, and patient specific modelling now enable increasingly realistic analyses across multiple spatial and temporal scales. These developments are strengthening links between fundamental mechanics and clinical practice, particularly in musculoskeletal biomechanics, implant and prosthesis design, rehabilitation, and personalised treatment planning. At the same time, progress in biomaterials, biofabrication, and advanced manufacturing is creating new opportunities to develop and evaluate clinically relevant devices and regenerative strategies. This Research Topic will bring these complementary approaches together within a focused biomechanics-to-clinic framework.A persistent challenge is translating biomechanical knowledge and modelling advances into robust tools that can inform diagnosis, intervention, rehabilitation, and long-term patient care. The goal of this Research Topic is to highlight research that integrates experimental characterisation, computational modelling, and clinical or preclinical validation to address this translational gap. Contributions should demonstrate how tissue-level mechanics, multiscale and patient-specific simulations, and biomechanics-informed design can improve the understanding and treatment of injury, degeneration, and disease. The collection will also showcase the use of artificial intelligence, medical imaging, robotics, and advanced manufacturing in surgical planning, rehabilitation, implant optimisation, and outcome prediction. By connecting mechanistic insight with clinically meaningful applications, the Topic aims to identify reproducible methods, validation strategies, and design principles that support safer medical devices, more personalised interventions, and improved patient outcomes. This Research Topic welcomes translational studies using experimental, computational, theoretical, or clinical approaches. We invite contributions addressing research on musculoskeletal biomechanics, but not limited to, the following themes:o Soft tissue characterisation and tissue-level mechanicso Multiscale and patient-specific modellingo Finite element and other computational biomechanics methodso Musculoskeletal biomechanicso Implant, prosthesis, orthosis, and biomechanics-informed medical device designo Experimental and clinical validation of biomechanical modelsSubmissions should maintain a clear connection between biomechanical mechanisms and clinically relevant questions or applications.
