Advances in brain-computer interfaces: adaptive decoding, real-world applications, and neural data augmentation

Research on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) stands at the intersection of neuroscience, engineering, and artificial intelligence, aiming to bridge communication between the brain and external devices. Despite major strides in the technical feasibility of BCIs, especially regarding neural signal acquisition and interface hardware, significant obstacles persist in translating laboratory advancements to real-world use. Key limitations include the adaptability of decoding algorithms to dynamic environments, the robustness of BCIs in daily life scenarios, and the challenges posed by limited or noisy neural data. Recent studies highlight the emerging importance of adaptive decoding—where algorithms learn and adjust to individual and contextual changes—and neural data augmentation techniques that compensate for sparse or imperfect datasets, both of which are critical for improving BCI reliability outside controlled settings.Progress in BCI research has demonstrated promising results, with adaptive decoders capable of tracking neural plasticity and providing more flexible user control, as well as machine learning approaches that can synthesize or enrich neural datasets to enhance training and performance. While these advances bring BCIs closer to mainstream use for assistive communication, rehabilitation, and even gaming, much work remains to evaluate their robustness and usability in diverse, everyday contexts. There is a growing consensus on the need for paradigms and technologies that can handle variability in neural signals, user states, and environmental conditions. Despite several prototype demonstrations and pilot studies, comprehensive understanding of BCIs' long-term efficacy, safety, ethical considerations, and user acceptance remains limited. This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding and development of BCIs by focusing on adaptive decoding methods, strategies for neural data augmentation, and assessments of their performance in real-world environments. The goal is to facilitate multidisciplinary dialogue and the generation of novel solutions that push BCIs beyond the laboratory, addressing fundamental questions about algorithm adaptability, data reliability, and system integration for non-expert end-users.To gather further insights in the emerging fields of adaptive BCI decoding, neural data augmentation, and practical BCI application, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Development and validation of adaptive decoding algorithmso Neural data augmentation methods for BCIso Challenges and opportunities in long-term BCI useo Ethical, usability, and safety considerations in everyday BCI deploymento Novel applications of BCIs in communicationo User-centered design and evaluation for practical BCI adoption Topic editors: Thomas Costecalde, Foteini Simistira Liwicki Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78470/advances-in-brain-computer-interfaces-adaptive-decoding-real-world-applications-and-neural-data-augmentation
