Advances in Carbon Capture and Storage for Sustainable Concrete

The field of sustainable construction materials is currently seeking transformative solutions to reduce the environmental impact associated with concrete production, one of the largest contributors to global CO₂ emissions. As the construction industry faces mounting pressure to meet net-zero targets, integrating effective carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategies within cement-based materials presents a promising pathway. Recent research has delivered advancements in carbonation curing processes, novel binder systems, and material formulations aimed at both reducing emissions during production and securely storing CO₂ within concrete matrices. However, several challenges persist relating to scale, efficiency, cost, durability, and lifecycle environmental impacts, and there remains an urgent need for interdisciplinary approaches that bridge the knowledge gaps between materials science, engineering, and sustainability assessment. This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive forum for pioneering studies and critical reviews that push the boundaries of carbon capture and storage technologies as applied to concrete and related materials. The primary objective is to accelerate the development, deployment, and optimization of sustainable concrete systems, with a focus on minimising their carbon footprint while enhancing performance. We seek to answer emerging questions about the design of carbon-negative binders, the kinetics and mechanisms of CO₂ mineralization, the long-term durability of carbonation-cured materials, and the real-world impact of these innovations as demonstrated by lifecycle assessments. This Research Topic welcomes contributions that explore the breadth of scientific, technical, and practical aspects of carbon capture and storage in cement-based materials, with a particular emphasis on novel methodologies and scalable technologies. Both fundamental research and applied studies are encouraged. To gather further insights across these boundaries, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Carbon capture and storage mechanisms in concrete• Carbonation-cured alkali-activated materials• CO₂ mineralization processes• Carbonate binder development and performance• Lifecycle assessment of low-carbon concrete systems• Optimization of carbonation curing processes• Durability assessment of carbonation-cured compositesResearch Topic is not limited to carbon capture and storage (CCS) of cement-based materials at the production stage, but also to advancements in CCS of cement-based materials during their use as well (e.g., concrete as an active carbonation product).
