Advances in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation is a cornerstone of care for individuals living with chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. As these conditions often coexist and share similar risk factors, the need for integrated rehabilitation strategies has become increasingly urgent. Traditional approaches have treated cardiac and pulmonary conditions in isolation, but recent evidence emphasizes the interconnected nature of these systems and the benefits of a unified, multidisciplinary approach. Advances in exercise physiology, telehealth, patient-centred care, and personalized intervention models have further enhanced the delivery and impact of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs. This evolving field now encompasses not only physical training but also education, behavioural support, and long-term self-management strategies. By addressing respiratory and cardiovascular components simultaneously, integrated rehabilitation programs can improve functional capacity, quality of life, and long-term outcomes. This Research Topic aims to explore and promote innovations in the integrated delivery of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, including special topics in pulmonary function. Despite growing recognition of the benefits of combining respiratory and cardiovascular rehabilitation, significant gaps remain in how these programs are designed, implemented, and evaluated. We seek to highlight interdisciplinary strategies that optimize health outcomes across diverse patient populations, particularly those with coexisting chronic conditions such as COPD and heart failure. We aim to gather high-quality research, clinical insights, and implementation studies that address key challenges in the field, such as limited access, patient adherence, and baseline pulmonary function and health. Submissions may include original research, systematic reviews, case studies, or perspectives on topics such as exercise prescription, risk stratification, remote and hybrid models of care, outcome measurement, and health policy implications. We particularly welcome contributions that address the integration of digital health tools and culturally responsive approaches in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, this Research Topic will support the advancement of evidence-based, holistic rehabilitation models that align with current clinical needs and healthcare system priorities. We encourage submissions addressing a range of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, including COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, heart failure, and post-acute cardiac events.Specific themes of interest include, but are not limited to:- Integrated models of care for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation- Exercise prescription and outcome monitoring- Baseline Pulmonary function in special populations - Telerehabilitation and digital health solutions for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation- Patient adherence and behaviour change strategies in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation- Multidisciplinary and culturally responsive care in cardiopulmonary rehabilitationSubmissions should provide new insights, propose practical solutions, or critically examine existing rehabilitation practices within the context of cardiopulmonary health.
