Advances in Corneal Surgery: Techniques, Technologies, and Outcomes

Corneal surgery is undergoing a period of significant transformation, driven by the emergence of novel surgical techniques, precision imaging, and next-generation technologies. While these advances hold considerable promise for improving visual outcomes and reducing complications, the pace of innovation has outstripped the availability of high-quality clinical evidence to guide their adoption. This Research Topic invites original research, reviews, and case series that critically evaluate recent advances in anterior corneal and refractive surgery, with a focus on clinical applicability, safety profiles, and long-term outcomes. It aims to bridge the gap between rapid technological development and evidence-based surgical practice, supporting the standardization and responsible adoption of modern corneal procedures. This topic is intentionally scoped to anterior segment and refractive approaches; endothelial transplantation and cell-based therapies are covered in a complementary Research Topic in the same section.Suitable themes for manuscripts include (but are not limited to):- Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) - indications and outcomes- Management of keratoconus and corneal ectasia, including cross-linking- Refractive corneal surgery (LASIK, SMILE, PRK) - outcomes and emerging techniques- Management of complex and high-risk cases in anterior corneal surgery- Intraoperative technologies and surgical guidance systems- Corneal imaging, tomography, and advanced diagnostics- Real-world data, registry-based outcomes, and comparative effectiveness studiesThis collection is aimed at corneal surgeons, ophthalmic researchers, and clinicians with an interest in evidence-based anterior and refractive surgical practice.
