Advances in Drug-Releasing Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices

Drug-releasing medical devices have revolutionized therapeutic delivery by integrating pharmacological function directly into biomedical implants. A landmark example is the drug-eluting stent (DES), which dramatically reduced restenosis rates by enabling localized, controlled release of antiproliferative agents within coronary arteries. This success has catalyzed broader innovation across wound healing, cancer therapy, and infection control, where polymeric carriers and surface-engineered materials are tailored for precise drug kinetics and biocompatibility. Advances in polymer chemistry, computational modeling, and analytical quantification have enabled devices that respond to physiological cues and deliver drugs with temporal and spatial precision. As interdisciplinary research continues to bridge materials science and clinical medicine, drug-releasing devices are poised to play a central role in personalized and minimally invasive therapies. The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together a collection of papers that individually and collectively explore the design principle and medical applications of drug-releasing devices. These insights will provide fundamental understanding on the drug-releasing mechanism and further inspire the design of novel and more complex drug-releasing materials. More importantly, by presenting show-case applications of drug-releasing materials, we hope to bridge the knowledge gap between materials scientists and medical scientists and broader the future usage of drug-releasing materials in medical technologies. We welcome the submission of original research and review articles in the field of drug-releasing biomaterials and biomedical devices. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:1. Computational Modeling of Drug Release Kinetics: Development and validation of mathematical models to simulate drug diffusion, degradation, and release profiles from biomaterial matrices.2.Analytical Techniques for Drug Release Quantification: Advanced methods for measuring drug concentration and release rates, including spectroscopic, chromatographic, and imaging-based approaches.3. Development of Biocompatible Polymeric Materials: Design, synthesis, and characterization of polymers with tailored biocompatibility, degradation rates, and drug-loading capacities for controlled release applications.
