Advances in Human Neural Interface Technologies: Shifting from Therapeutic Intervention to Delayed Onset of Neurological Dysfunction
Neural interface technologies have rapidly progressed from experimental tools to clinically relevant systems capable of interacting with the human nervous system. While most current applications focus on symptomatic treatment or functional restoration after disease onset, emerging evidence suggests that neural interfaces may also enable early intervention, functional preservation, and the delayed onset of neurological dysfunction. This paradigm shift has the potential to transform neurological care from reactive treatment toward preventive and disease modifying strategies, working through biological mechanisms such as adaptive neuroplasticity, brain resilience, network reorganization, and functional preservation. This Research Topic invites original studies and reviews presenting advances in human neural interface technologies that move beyond symptomatic treatment toward early intervention, functional preservation, and delayed onset of neurological dysfunction. Contributions should emphasize translational, clinical, or first in human applications of neural technologies, including invasive and non invasive interfaces, neuromodulation systems, and brain–computer interfaces. High quality preclinical studies offering mechanistic insight with clear translational relevance to human neural interfaces are also welcome, provided the primary focus remains on human application.Particular interest is given to work demonstrating mechanisms, efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness, psychological impact and ethical considerations of neural interfaces as preventive or disease modifying tools in neurological conditions, with a focus on technologies that can support scalable, sustainable healthcare solutions.Submissions are encouraged to address one or more of the following focus areas:o Predictive and Early Intervention Neural Interfaces Studies addressing neural interfaces capable of detecting, predicting, or intervening in early or pre clinical stages of neurological dysfunction.o Human Centric, Adaptive, and Closed Loop Neural Technologies Research on technologies designed for long term use, personalization, functional preservation, and dynamic interaction with neural and behavioral states.o Clinical Translation, Cost Effectiveness, and Health System Integration Contributions addressing clinical validation, real world deployment, and economic sustainability of neural interface technologies.o Psychological, Ethical, and Societal Dimensions of Preventive Neural Interfaces Research exploring user acceptance, autonomy, cognitive and emotional impact, ethical governance, equity, and responsible innovation of using neural interfaces as preventive or disease modifying tools. This Research Topic seeks to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective on how advances in human neural interface technologies can redefine neurological care and pave the way toward preventive, ethical, and sustainable neurotechnological interventions.
