Advances in Laryngeal Cancer
Laryngeal cancers account for a significant proportion of head-and-neck malignancies and are linked to smoking and alcohol use. These tumours can develop in the glottic, supraglottic, or subglottic regions, often presenting with hoarseness, dysphagia, chronic cough, or airway obstruction. Early diagnosis is crucial, as glottic tumours often produce symptoms sooner and have better prognoses. Staging laryngeal tumours is challenging because subtle differences in vocal-cord mobility, cartilage invasion, and subsite extension can be difficult to assess accurately. Imaging may underestimate early lesions or overestimate cartilage involvement. Variability in endoscopic evaluation also contributes to inconsistent classification, influencing treatment decisions and prognostic accuracy. Current research explores molecular biomarkers, improved imaging techniques, and organ-preserving therapeutic strategies. Advances in surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic treatments aim to enhance survival while maintaining speech, swallowing, and overall quality of life.Current research focuses on early detection through advanced imaging and molecular biomarkers, aiming to identify tumours at more treatable stages. Additional areas of investigation include targeted therapies that address specific genetic mutations, immunotherapy to boost the body’s natural defences, and organ-preserving treatments designed to maintain speech and swallowing functions while effectively controlling the disease. Post-treatment complications of laryngeal cancer include swallowing difficulties, chronic hoarseness or aphonia, and laryngeal stenosis, occurring after both surgery and radiation. Rehabilitation focuses on speech therapy, swallowing training, and respiratory exercises. Multidisciplinary care helps patients restore communication, improve nutrition, and adapt to long-term functional changes, enhancing overall quality of life. The scope of this research topic is to analyse the most recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal cancer, as well as current rehabilitation protocols. Furthermore, we aim to describe new findings in molecular carcinogenesis and potential novel therapeutic targets. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini-Reviews and Perspectives related to laryngeal cancer, including, but not limited to:• Surgery (and Perioperative Therapies)• Radiotherapy (and concurrent =Chemoradiation)• Systemic therapy (Cytotoxics, Targeted Therapies, Immunotherapy)• Organ Preservation Procedures• Post-operative Rehabilitation• Carcinogenesis• Artificial Intelligence• Diagnostic Innovations Topic editors: Giuseppe Riva, Giuseppe Carlo Iorio, Jacopo Galli, Giancarlo Pecorari, Stefano Settimi, Marco Carlo Merlano Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77333/advances-in-laryngeal-cancer
