Advances in modern neuropsychology: precision assessment, intervention, and research in classic and technology-enhanced settings

This Research Topic is part of a series with “Current Research and Future Development of Neuropsychology”. Clinical neuropsychology is a dynamic field that investigates how neurobiological systems shape cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning in both healthy individuals and those with neurological and systemic illnesses. Traditionally, neuropsychological practices have relied on clinic-based assessments to characterize cognitive phenotypes, inform diagnosis, and guide intervention across a range of disorders, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases, and conditions where cognition is secondarily affected, like metabolic or autoimmune disorders. Recent evidence highlights the field’s growing emphasis on translational care and the urgent need to improve the ecological validity and practicality of neuropsychological testing. Despite these advances, challenges remain in ensuring that assessment and intervention strategies are personalized, clinically meaningful, and readily applicable in diverse real-world settings. The central aim of this Research Topic is to advance the science and clinical application of neuropsychology by integrating innovative experimental models with translational, technology-enabled tools. Specifically, this Research Topic seeks to address how emerging digital assessments, remote and hybrid delivery models, and physiological measurement paradigms can improve the reliability, sensitivity, and utility of neuropsychological care. Key objectives include evaluating new methodologies for their clinical utility, reproducibility, and real-world feasibility, as well as exploring how controlled experimental models can bridge gaps in our understanding of neural mechanism-behavior relationships and inform practical clinical pathways. The overall goal is to foster research that enhances both fundamental knowledge and patient-centered outcomes. This Research Topic is focused on studies that broaden and strengthen the translational pipeline from experimental neuropsychology to clinical implementation, while also critiquing and expanding technological advances in assessment and intervention. Submissions should fall within these boundaries, with an emphasis on rigorously designed studies linking neurobiological systems, cognitive processes, and clinical utility. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Novel technology-enhanced neuropsychological assessment methods (e.g., digital, VR/AR, wearables)o Tele-neuropsychology and hybrid models: validation, access, and equityo Experimental approaches to isolating neural mechanisms underlying cognition and behavioro Integration of neurophysiological and behavioral data in clinical contextso Methodological innovations improving real-world ecological validity and implementationo Patient-centered outcomes and utility in neuropsychological intervention and rehabilitation Topic editors: Aleksandra Bala, Aneta Szymaszek, Szczepan Iwanski Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78848/advances-in-modern-neuropsychology-precision-assessment-intervention-and-research-in-classic-and-technology-enhanced-settings
