Advances in Myocardial Protection: Update and Future Directions in Cardiac Procedures

Cardiac procedures have witnessed remarkable advancements over the past two decades, resulting in increasingly precise interventions, less and less invasive approaches, and the ability to treat patients with ever more complex profiles. Despite these advances, significant risks remain, particularly due to the often unavoidable transient myocardial ischemia associated with such procedures. Hence, myocardial protection remains a pivotal component in ensuring successful cardiac interventions, whether surgical, percutaneous, or through transplantation. This area of study continues to push the boundaries of science, seeking methods that not only reduce post-operative complications but also promote optimal recovery of cardiac muscle. The current Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in the field of myocardial protection. It seeks to disseminate research findings from clinical, preclinical, or laboratory studies that explore both established and novel approaches. Topics may cover traditional aspects of myocardial protection, such as hypothermia and cardioplegia solutions, as well as new areas like the synergistic effects of innovative drugs, coronary perfusion techniques, and preconditioning strategies. Experimental studies focusing on myocardial preservation mechanisms against ischemia-reperfusion injuries or identifying biomarkers of myocardial injury and protection are also encouraged. Moreover, articles presenting surveys of different centers' practices, unique considerations in specific conditions such as paediatrics or transplantation, and evaluations of the regulatory landscapes across countries are welcome. To gather further insights into myocardial protection during cardiac procedures, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Established and emerging techniques for myocardial protection• Mechanisms underpinning myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injuries• Novel pharmacological strategies for cardioprotection• Comparative studies of hypothermia and cardioplegia solutions• Regulatory policies impacting myocardial protection strategiesThis Research Topic accepts the following type of articles:- Case reports- Brief research reports- Original research articles- Study protocols- Clinical trials- Mini reviews- Reviews- Systematic reviews- Methods articles- Perspective articles- Opinion articles- Policy and Practice reviews Topic editors: Hendrik Tevaearai Stahel, David Chambers, Antonio Maria Calafiore, Tomas Antonio Salerno, Bruno K Podesser Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/70910/advances-in-myocardial-protection-update-and-future-directions-in-cardiac-procedures
