Advances in Nanocellulose-Based Biomaterials: Fundamentals, Characterization, and Applications

Nanocellulose research is a rapidly advancing area within biomaterials science, attracting widespread interest due to the remarkable properties of cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibers. Produced through diverse manufacturing methods, nanocellulose exhibits exceptional strength, low density, and high purity - traits which underpin its suitability for applications ranging from drug delivery and tissue engineering to environmental remediation. Recent studies have demonstrated the utility of nanocellulose-based hydrogels and aerogels as high-performance scaffolds, particularly in dermal and bone regeneration, owing to their advanced porous structures and favourable biological responses. Nevertheless, the field continues to grapple with critical issues such as optimizing biodegradability and mechanical performance, both of which are essential for further biomedical adoption and successful environmental interventions. This Research Topic aims to synthesize the most recent advancements in the production and characterization of nanocellulose, exploring both established and emerging manufacturing routes from various natural sources. It seeks to critically assess structural and biological properties that drive the performance of nanocellulose-based biomaterials. Furthermore, the topic aspires to highlight innovative biomedical applications, such as integration into nanosystems and composites to facilitate tissue repair, and to scrutinize cutting-edge advances like 3D printing of nanocellulose structures. By addressing current challenges and technological limitations, the Topic encourages exploration of more sustainable, functional, and versatile biomaterial solutions. The range of this Research Topic encompasses methodologies for extracting and modifying nanocellulose, as well as comprehensive physiological and structural characterizations.
