Advances in neurodevelopmental pathology: A histopathological perspective

Neurodevelopmental disorders constitute a heterogeneous group of conditions typified by impaired brain development, which manifests as cognitive, social, emotional, and motor deficits. Despite substantial advances in identifying genetic, molecular, and clinical aspects underlying these disorders, precise histopathological features and neuropathological alterations remain less systematically explored.Recent studies have progressively highlighted diverse histopathological abnormalities, such as neuronal migration defects, cortical dysplasia, abnormal synaptic connectivity, glial alterations, and subtle cytoarchitectural changes in association with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. However, significant variations and insufficient characterization persist, and further comprehensive histopathological analyses and standardized criteria are urgently needed to strengthen existing knowledge. This Research Topic aims to consolidate emerging knowledge about histopathological features of neurodevelopmental disorders, clarify the neuropathological basis of these conditions, and identify potential histopathological markers that could contribute to early detection, diagnosis, and prognosis. Specifically, we seek to answer questions about the correlation between clinical manifestations, pathological subtypes, and histopathological characteristics, elucidating common versus disorder-specific neuropathological features detectable at histological levels. Furthermore, we aim to explore associations between genetic and molecular factors and observable histopathological patterns. To gather further insights into neurodevelopmental pathology globally, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Detailed histopathological characterisation of neurodevelopmental disorders across different age groups.• Comparative neuropathological analysis among various neurodevelopmental conditions.• Identification of histopathological biomarkers useful for accurate diagnosis and assessment of disease severity.• Investigations into correlations between genetics, molecular findings, and histopathological features.• Innovative techniques for better histopathological assessment, imaging, and quantification of neuropathological changes.• Animal models of known neurodevelopmental disorders.
