Advances in Non-Animal Toxicity Testing: Integrating Mechanistic Insights through In Vitro and In Silico Approaches
This Research Topic will showcase advances in non-animal toxicology that improve the mechanistic understanding and predictive assessment of chemical safety. We welcome studies using in vitro, in silico, and integrated approaches, including human-relevant cell models, organoids, microphysiological systems, omics technologies, computational toxicology, QSAR, PBPK modeling, adverse outcome pathways, and AI-enabled prediction tools. Contributions addressing validation, reproducibility, and regulatory translation are also encouraged. The Topic particularly seeks work that combines experimental and computational methods to generate mechanistically grounded evidence for hazard identification and risk assessment. Submissions that avoid the use of animal testing or animal-derived materials, including fetal bovine serum (FBS), will be especially encouraged. Authors are invited to adopt fully animal-free approaches that support more ethical, human-relevant, and innovative toxicology. Topic editors: Amit K.
