Advances in Non-Ergodic Seismic Hazard Assessment in Tectonic and Volcanic Environments

Seismic hazard assessment has long relied on ergodic assumptions, treating ground-motion variability as spatially uniform by trading location for a global dataset. Yet earthquake source processes, wave propagation paths, and site response vary systematically from one region to the next. Non-ergodic methods capture this spatial structure directly, giving a more realistic picture of ground-motion variability, reducing epistemic uncertainty, and producing hazard estimates that communities and engineers can act on with greater confidence. These gains matter most in tectonically active and volcanic regions, where dense instrumentation and complex source behaviour both demand and enable region-specific models. This Research Topic aims to bring together original research advancing non-ergodic seismic hazard assessment across a broad range of tectonic and volcanic settings. We welcome contributions that develop the methods, datasets, and applications behind next-generation regional hazard models, and we particularly encourage work that connects seismology, engineering, volcanology, and data science. The goal is to support the design of more resilient infrastructure and the development of more effective risk mitigation strategies. We welcome Original Research, Reviews, Methods, Data Reports, and other Frontiers article types addressing themes including, but not limited to:• Non-ergodic ground-motion models and region-specific GMPEs/GMMs• Regional characterization of source, path, and site effects• Quantification and reduction of epistemic and aleatory uncertainties• Physics-based ground-motion simulations• Seismic hazard assessment in active volcanic regions• Integration of dense monitoring networks and multidisciplinary datasets• Machine learning and artificial intelligence for ground-motion modeling and hazard assessment• Applications of non-ergodic approaches to engineering seismology and seismic risk assessment• New integrated observed and synthetic datasets, including standardized ground-motion flat files for non-ergodic modeling Topic editors: Nitin Sharma, Hossein Ebrahimian, Vincenzo Convertito, Giovanni Lanzano Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85300/advances-in-non-ergodic-seismic-hazard-assessment-in-tectonic-and-volcanic-environments
