Advances in Organophosphorus Synthesis: Microwave, Continuous-Flow and Green Approaches
Organophosphorus compounds, such as phosphinates, phosphonates, phosphine oxides and P-heterocycles including bioactive derivatives and P-ligands, are central building blocks across organic, medicinal and coordination chemistry. Their synthesis poses distinctive challenges, from the selective construction of P-C and P-O bonds to the assembly of phosphorus heterocycles and the functionalization of the substrates using suitable catalysts. Classical routes often apply P-chloro reagents, metal catalysts, volatile solvents and energy-intensive conditions. These procedures may be of limited atom efficiency and may be disadvantageous regarding their environmental impact. In recent years, the synthetic toolbox has expanded considerably: catalytic P-C bond formation, microwave activation, continuous-flow and recirculated-flow systems, ionic liquids, solvent-free protocols and chlorine-free direct esterification now offer cleaner, faster and more scalable access to organophosphorus targets, whose applications span medicinal, catalytic and materials chemistry. This momentum offers a timely opportunity to consolidate a vibrant yet currently dispersed research community. This Research Topic aims to create a consolidated, high-visibility home for modern organophosphorus synthesis, bringing together a community that is currently dispersed across many sections and journals. Rooted in synthetic organic chemistry, it covers new methods and transformations for building organophosphorus compounds, highlighting the efficient and sustainable catalytic strategies, continuous-flow, microwave-assisted and chlorine-free methods among them, that are reshaping how these molecules are made. We aim to assemble a balanced set of Original Research and review-type articles that reflect current trends and define future directions in the field. Hosted in the Organic Chemistry section and proposed for cross-listing with Green and Sustainable Chemistry, the Topic is designed for broad reach and lasting reference value. Ultimately, the goal is a coherent, internationally authored collection that captures both the methodological depth and the practical advances of contemporary organophosphorus chemistry. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles, in all cases focused on organophosphorus compounds, on themes including, but not limited to:• New synthetic methods and transformations for organophosphorus compounds, including P-C and P-O bond formation• Catalytic synthesis of organophosphorus compounds, such as Hirao coupling and the Kabachnik-Fields reaction• Synthesis of hydroxy- and aminophosphonic derivatives, phosphorus heterocycles, and phosphorus-based coordination complexes/ligands• Microwave-assisted, continuous-flow and recirculated-flow synthesis of organophosphorus compounds, including scale-up• Solvent-free, catalyst-free and chlorine-free strategies in organophosphorus synthesis• Bioactive phosphonates and phosphinates, and mechanistic or computational studies of organophosphorus systemsThe Research Topic spans the breadth of modern organophosphorus synthesis, with a particular interest in efficient and sustainable methods. Submissions should center on phosphorus-containing compounds; contributions beyond the themes above are warmly encouraged. Topic editors: György Keglevich, Jacek E.
