Advances in Parathyroid Surgery: From Diagnosis to Surgical Outcomes

Parathyroid surgery has evolved substantially, from routine bilateral neck exploration to image-guided focused/minimally invasive approaches, supported by refinements in preoperative localization (4D-CT, sestamibi SPECT/CT, choline PET) and intraoperative adjuncts (ioPTH, near-infrared autofluorescence). Indications now span sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism, hereditary syndromes (MEN1, MEN2A, HPT-JT), secondary/tertiary renal hyperparathyroidism, and parathyroid malignancy. Despite this progress, variability persists in surgical strategy, extent of resection, and long-term outcome reporting across centers. This Research Topic aims to bring together current evidence and emerging techniques across the full spectrum of parathyroid surgery — diagnostic localization, operative strategy, intraoperative technology, and postoperative outcomes — with the hereditary and genetic forms addressed as a dedicated subtopic rather than the central theme.• Preoperative localization techniques • Surgical strategy (focused vs. bilateral exploration; minimally invasive approaches) • Intraoperative adjuncts (ioPTH, autofluorescence) • Secondary/tertiary (renal) hyperparathyroidism • Hereditary hyperparathyroidism (MEN1, MEN2A/4, HPT-JT, FIHP) • Recurrent/persistent disease and reoperative surgery • Parathyroid carcinoma and atypical adenoma • Long-term outcomes and quality of life Topic editors: Leandro Luongo Matos, DELMAR MUNIZ LOURENCO Jr., Fabio Luiz De Menezes Montenegro Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85245/advances-in-parathyroid-surgery-from-diagnosis-to-surgical-outcomes
