Advances in Photosynthesis Research: Bridging Biophysical Insights and Global Sustainability

For over two centuries, photosynthesis has remained a frontier of inquiry for biologists, biochemists, chemists, and physicists alike. However, we have entered a golden age of discovery; the last five years alone have seen a more rapid acceleration in our understanding of photosynthetic mechanisms, regulation, and optimization than any previous era. While nature performs photosynthesis with an elegance that appears effortless, the scientific community continues to grapple with the complexities of replicating these processes in artificial systems. As we face the dual global crises of food insecurity and climate change, the mandate for the photosynthesis community is clear: we must translate our deep mechanistic insights into tangible, nature-based solutions. This Research Topic led by the Chief Editors of Frontiers in Photobiology serves as a premier platform to consolidate the diverse perspectives presented at the International Conference on Photosynthesis Research (ICPR 2026) meeting, from the fundamental biophysics of light-harvesting to the large-scale engineering of terrestrial carbon sinks. We particularly encourage contributions from the ISPR 2026 speakers as their work represents the cutting edge of Photobiology.
