Advances in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery: Microsurgery, Wound Healing, Burn Reconstruction and Regenerative Strategies

Plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery represents a rapidly evolving field that integrates advanced surgical techniques with fundamental principles of tissue biology, regeneration, and wound repair. Continuous developments in microsurgery, biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and perioperative optimization have significantly expanded the possibilities for restoring form and function in patients with complex tissue defects, trauma, burns, and oncologic resections, as well as improving outcomes in aesthetic procedures.Despite remarkable progress, several biological and clinical challenges remain. Tissue ischemia, microcirculatory dysfunction, impaired wound healing, inflammation, fibrosis, and scar formation continue to influence surgical outcomes across reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. In microsurgical reconstruction, ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury remains a critical determinant of flap viability and postoperative complications. Similarly, in burn reconstruction, chronic wounds, and compromised tissue environments, the interplay between inflammation, vascular perfusion, and regenerative signaling pathways can profoundly affect healing trajectories and long-term functional and aesthetic outcomes.Recent advances in molecular biology and translational research have highlighted the roles of oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, immune modulation, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrix remodeling in determining tissue survival and regeneration. At the same time, innovations in surgical techniques, perioperative management, biomaterials, and tissue engineering are increasingly aimed at modulating these biological pathways to improve reconstructive success and patient outcomes. This Research Topic aims to bring together interdisciplinary research exploring the biological foundations and clinical applications of modern plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery. We seek contributions that bridge mechanistic insights with clinically actionable strategies to enhance tissue viability, optimize wound healing, and improve functional and aesthetic results across a broad spectrum of reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.Particular emphasis will be placed on studies that integrate basic science discoveries with translational and clinical applications, addressing both the pathophysiology of tissue injury and the development of innovative therapeutic and surgical solutions. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses experimental, translational, and clinical research that advances knowledge in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery, including microsurgical reconstruction, burn care, and wound healing.
