Advances in Position-Sensitive Detectors : Insights from PSD14 Conference

Position-sensitive detectors underpin discovery and innovation across a broad range of fields from tracking particle collisions to imaging biological tissue, from mapping distant astrophysical sources to screening cargo for security threats. As detector technologies mature in areas such as pixel integration, quantum sensing, and fast-timing electronics, researchers face growing opportunities to translate techniques developed in one domain (e.g., high-energy physics) into new applications in another (e.g., medical imaging or planetary science). This Research Topic invites original research, reviews, and technical reports covering the design, development, characterization, and application of position-sensitive detection systems. Building on themes from the PSD14 conference, we welcome contributions spanning:- Particle and nuclear physics applications, including detectors for collider and fixed-target experiments- Pixel detectors and integration technologies, including 3D integration, monolithic sensors, and readout ASICs- Astrophysics, space, and extreme environments, including radiation-hard detectors for space missions, astroparticle physics instrumentation, and planetary science payloads- Security, environmental, and nuclear imaging applications, including radiological screening and non-destructive imaging- Gas-based, X-ray, and gamma-ray detection technologies, including advances in gaseous detectors and hybrid pixel/gamma imaging systems- Emerging technologies, including quantum detectors, novel photon-counting systems, and position-sensitive fast-timing detectors- Detectors for light sources and neutron facilities, including instrumentation for synchrotrons, free-electron lasers (FELs), and neutron scattering experiments- Life sciences and condensed matter applications, including detectors for biomedical imaging and structural/materials scienceWe particularly encourage submissions that highlight cross-disciplinary transfer of detector concepts and applications across different fields. This Research Topic aims to bring together the detector physics and instrumentation community to showcase state-of-the-art advances and highlight future directions for position-sensitive detection technology.Submission and fees: This Research Topic is hosted in Frontiers in Detector Science and cross-listed with Frontiers in Physics. Authors may submit to either journal; the respective journal’sArticle Processing Charge (APC) will apply. 50% fee waivers are available for submissions to Frontiers in Detector Science. Interested authors are encouraged to contact the Topic Editors or the journal’s editorial office to check waiver eligibility and availability, as these are limited.Article types:We invite submitted papers from the participants of PSD14 conference.
