Advances in Skull Base Surgery: Contemporary Strategies, Techniques, and Clinical Outcomes

Skull base surgery represents one of the most complex and rapidly evolving subspecialties in surgical medicine, demanding a sophisticated integration of neurosurgical, otolaryngological, and oncological expertise. Advances in imaging technology, endoscopic techniques, and intraoperative navigation systems have significantly expanded the surgical armamentarium, enabling more precise, less invasive approaches to lesions that were once considered inoperable or high-risk. Despite these developments, skull base surgery continues to present substantial challenges, including the proximity of critical neurovascular structures, variable tumor biology, and the need to balance radical resection with the preservation of neurological function and quality of life. This Research Topic aims to bring together original research, systematic reviews, and case series reflecting the current state of the art across the full spectrum of skull base surgery. We welcome contributions addressing open and endoscopic surgical approaches, intraoperative technologies and navigation, management of specific pathologies — including meningiomas, pituitary tumors, chordomas, craniopharyngiomas, schwannomas, epidermoid tumors, and cranial base malformations — postoperative outcomes, complication management, and long-term quality-of-life data. Multidisciplinary perspectives and international contributions are particularly encouraged.
