Advances in the development of antivirals and vaccines
The field of antivirals and vaccines is pivotal to modern biomedical research, especially in the context of persistent and emerging viral threats. Recent years have witnessed significant advancements in the discovery and implementation of antiviral agents and vaccines, driven by a deeper understanding of viral pathogenesis, immune response modulation, and genomic technologies. Despite these achievements, challenges such as viral resistance, global disparities in access, and the emergence of novel pathogens underscore the need for comprehensive syntheses and critical appraisal of current approaches.Ongoing debates address the optimization of delivery platforms, the management of adverse effects, and the durability of immune protection, while recent studies have expanded our knowledge of next-generation vaccine platforms and broad-spectrum antivirals. However, there remains a pressing need for integrated perspectives that bridge basic science and clinical application, identify knowledge gaps, and anticipate future directions in the prevention and treatment of viral diseases. This Research Topic aims to bring together authoritative reviews, expert perspectives, and insightful commentaries on recent progress, persisting challenges, and emerging opportunities in the realms of antivirals and vaccines. By synthesizing a diverse range of viewpoints and critically evaluating the evolving landscape, the collection aims to clarify unresolved questions, highlight innovative approaches, and inspire new collaborations that can accelerate the translation of research findings into effective public health interventions. The scope of this Research Topic is broad, encompassing both foundational and translational aspects of antiviral and vaccine research, but excludes articles based on hypothesis not supported by published scientific data. To gather further insights in state-of-the-art in antiviral and vaccine development, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Current and emerging antivirals and vaccine platformsAntiviral resistance and strategies for overcoming itVaccine development pipelines, regulation, and public health policyIntegration of omics technologies in the discovery of antivirals and vaccinesImmunological mechanisms underlying vaccine efficacy and failuresGlobal barriers and facilitators to antiviral and vaccine accessAnalysis of safety, ethical, and societal considerations in antiviral and vaccine deploymentArticle types considered for this Research Topic could also include Mini-Reviews, and Hypotheses and Theory; alongside Reviews, Perspectives, and Commentaries, pertaining to the development and application of antivirals and vaccines.
