Advances in the Early Detection, Risk Stratification, and Monitoring of Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy remains one of the most common complications of diabetes and a major cause of preventable visual impairment. Although established screening programmes have improved detection, disease progression varies considerably between individuals, and some patients remain at risk of delayed diagnosis or insufficient follow-up.Recent advances in biomarkers, retinal imaging, and predictive approaches are creating new opportunities to identify diabetic retinopathy earlier and distinguish patients according to their risk of progression. At the same time, there is increasing interest in how metabolic, vascular, and demographic factors influence disease development and monitoring needs. This Research Topic aims to bring together clinical and translational research focused on improving the detection, risk assessment, and follow-up of diabetic retinopathy. It will highlight approaches that may support more personalised screening and monitoring strategies and improve the identification of patients at risk of vision-threatening disease.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Advances in the screening, early detection, and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy• Clinical, metabolic, vascular, and demographic factors associated with disease development and progression• Circulating, ocular, imaging, and other emerging biomarkers for risk assessment and monitoring• Risk-prediction approaches and personalised screening and follow-up strategies• Emerging imaging, digital, and teleophthalmology approaches for detection and monitoring• Monitoring of disease progression and treatment response• Associations between diabetic retinopathy and other diabetes - related vascular complications• Population - based and real-world studies of prevalence, screening, access to care, and clinical outcomes Topic editors: Kaliyaperumal Saravanan, Velmurugan Ganesan Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84432/advances-in-the-early-detection-risk-stratification-and-monitoring-of-diabetic-retinopathy
