Advances in the Prevention and Management of Postoperative Wound and Wound Infections and Complications

Postoperative wound infections and complications represent a persistent challenge within surgical practice and hospital care, significantly affecting patient outcomes and healthcare resources. Despite advancements in surgical precision and infection control protocols, surgical site infections (SSIs) remain among the most frequent healthcare-associated infections worldwide. Current research indicates that up to 5% of surgical patients may experience SSIs, leading to delayed recovery, prolonged hospitalization, and enhanced risk of morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have explored the molecular mechanisms of infection, the role of microbial biofilms in delayed healing, and the potential of smart dressings and predictive risk algorithms. However, despite these developments, the implementation of multidisciplinary and evidence-based models for prevention and management remains inconsistent globally. A comprehensive understanding that bridges clinical, microbiological, and technological insights is therefore critical to reducing the burden of postoperative wound complications. This Research Topic aims to explore cutting-edge advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of postoperative wound infections and related complications. Its primary goals include identifying emerging methods for early detection of infection, optimizing antimicrobial stewardship strategies, and evaluating novel therapeutic interventions such as oxygen-enriched therapies and biomaterial-based wound dressings. It also seeks to understand how digital health tools and precision medicine approaches can enhance patient-specific care plans, improve healing outcomes, and minimize antibiotic resistance. By fostering collaboration among surgeons, microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, and biomedical engineers, the Research Topic aspires to set new standards in postoperative wound management. To gather further insights into postoperative wound care, this Research Topic welcomes studies focusing on multidisciplinary innovations, clinical practices, and technological developments. We invite contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Mechanisms underpinning surgical site infections and delayed wound healing;• Early detection models and diagnostic biomarkers for postoperative infections;• Role of biofilms in chronic or non-healing postoperative wounds;• Advanced wound dressings and biotechnological applications for tissue regeneration;• Integration of antimicrobial stewardship in postoperative management;• Utilization of negative pressure, oxygen-based, or light-based therapies;• Wound infection management;• Predictive analytics and digital health tools in SSI prevention;• Strategies for managing complex or chronic postoperative wounds. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, systematic reviews, case studies, and clinical perspectives.
