Advances in the Psychiatric Perspective on the Relationship Between Mental Health in Population with Systemic Diseases: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Innovations

The intricate relationship between the central nervous system (CNS) and systemic diseases, brain-gut-axis, cardiovascular diseases or diabetes, is a rapidly expanding field with profound implications for psychiatry and public mental health. Emerging research highlights that neurological and psychiatric disorders extend beyond the brain, significantly influencing systemic health through direct neural interactions and indirect pathways, including immune dysregulation, metabolic disturbances, and chronic inflammation. Conversely, systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and cancer exert substantial effects on brain function, contributing to psychiatric manifestations such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. This research topic aims to elucidate the bidirectional mechanisms that govern CNS-systemic disease interactions, with a particular focus on neuroinflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and immune system involvement in psychiatric disorders, with a focus on the mental health of the population with systemic diseases. Understanding these interconnected pathways is essential for developing innovative psychiatric interventions that go beyond traditional symptom management. In particular, we will explore the potential of neuroimmune modulation, metabolic therapies, and microbiome-based approaches as emerging strategies in psychiatric care.A multidisciplinary approach is vital to comprehensively address this complex relationship. This research topic will include contributions from both basic science and clinical research. Key areas of focus will include novel biomarkers for early diagnosis, neuroimaging advancements, and genomic approaches to identify at-risk populations and targeted treatment strategies.By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, this research initiative aims to advance the understanding of CNS-systemic disease interactions from a psychiatric perspective. Our goal is to bridge the gap between internal medicine, and psychiatry, ultimately paving the way for personalized and integrative therapeutic approaches that enhance patient outcomes in psychiatric and systemic disorders.
